Notes

Global mobility is a compulsory component of the course. Students should refer to the faculty's study abroad webpage for more information including additional costs, as well as opportunities for funding. The Global Scholars Program also provides eligible students with financial assistance for the costs associated with overseas studies.

You can enrich your degree by honing your academic and professional skills through a range of flagship rich educational experiences (FREE), including the Monash Innovation Guarantee, Global Immersion Guarantee, Research, Experimentation and Discovery and/or Volunteering. These FREE units may be credited in place of your free electives if approved by the faculty. There are both 6 and 12 credit point unit options available.

If you are enrolled in a double degree it may be possible to utilise credit from one or both of your degrees to do a 6 and/or 12 credit point flagship rich educational experience. For information on eligible double degree combinations please see FREE.

Double degrees

The Bachelor of Global Studies can be taken in combination with the following courses:

  • A2000 Bachelor of Arts
  • C2000 Bachelor of Information Technology
  • B2001 Bachelor of Commerce
  • L3001 Bachelor of Laws (Honours)
  • S2000 Bachelor of Science

This will lead to the award of two degrees, the Bachelor of Global Studies and the degree awarded by the partner course. The requirements for the award of the Bachelor of Global Studies degree are the same whether the award is earned through a single or double degree course. You should refer to the relevant double degree handbook entry and the course map for specific requirements.

Learning outcomes

These course outcomes are aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework and Monash Graduate Attributes.

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:

1.

identify, define and describe key global challenges;

2.

apply knowledge about key global challenges to understand and examine different global contexts;

3.

compare and contrast a range of solutions to global challenges in different historical, linguistic and geographical settings;

4.

demonstrate sophisticated knowledge of approaches to collaboration, leadership and agency for social change;

5.

construct and communicate new understandings and practical innovative approaches to global challenges.

 

Structure

The course is structured in three parts: Part A. Global studies core, Part B. Global studies specialist knowledge and Part C. Free electives

Part A. Global studies core
You will compare and contrast a range of global challenges and solutions in different historical, linguistic, cultural, and geographical settings, focussing especially on developing an understanding of effective collaboration, communication and leadership across a range of contexts.

Part B. Global studies specialist knowledge
You will gain in-depth knowledge of a specific facet or facets of global studies through units grounded in a wide variety of humanities and social science disciplines. These units will provide you with the practical and theoretical skills needed to critically analyse, communicate and formulate innovative solutions to global challenges.

Part C. Free elective study
Electives will enable you to further develop your knowledge in the area of global studies, or arts more generally, or to select units from across the faculty or the University in which you are eligible to enrol.

Master's accelerated pathway

If you satisfy the below requirements, you may be invited to join the master's accelerated pathway program:

  • have achieved a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 65%; and 
  • have completed a minimum of 96 credit points in your bachelor degree

Please note that you should also have a minimum of 24 credit points of free electives available.

On joining the accelerated pathway your 24 credit points of free elective units will be replaced with specified units from your destination master's degree. As long as you attain a minimum WAM of 60% at the end of your bachelor studies, you will be eligible to continue your chosen master's studies the following year.

Progression to further studies

Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to a Master's course. You must have completed all the requirements for your undergraduate degree with a 60% average.
