Studying European Languages in a global context will develop a deeper understanding of the interconnections between different European languages and cultures, the global impact of Europe over time, and how European and other cultures and societies across the globe have challenged and deeply influenced each other. Your study of language, literature, history, film, arts, and popular culture will introduce you to some of the most influential ideas that have shaped our world and to the new ideas that will shape the future
You will be able to study in-country and immerse yourself in the language. We offer opportunities for study tours, study abroad and internships in Europe, Latin America and New Caledonia.
There is a growing need for professionals with excellent language and cultural skills. English alone is just not enough. Employers seek people with a real ability to communicate and translate across languages, cultures and societies. This major will provide you with the knowledge and skills that are applicable to a great variety of careers in business, government, NGOs, education, communication, and the cultural sector.
Together with language skills, this major will develop your digital and intercultural literacy, and your ability to think creatively and critically – all essential skills for any professional career. We will work with you to develop a personalised plan, identifying clear graduate outcomes, pathways to postgraduate studies, and opportunities to use your language and cultural skills in a professional environment. In your final year, you will have the opportunity to apply your language and intercultural skills in context, through a project or an internship that will be tailored to your particular interests. This opportunity will also allow you to develop a strong complementarity between the major in European Languages and your other fields of studies.
AvailabilityEuropean languages is listed in A2000 Bachelor of Arts at Clayton as a major, extended major and a minor, and in A0501 Diploma of Languages at Clayton as a major.
ATS3069/ATS3070 will only be offered in specific languages (French, German, Italian and Spanish) subject to sufficient enrolments.
Intending honours students
If you are intending to enter honours in this area of study you must have completed a major in the discipline, with a minimum of 24 credit points of study at Level 3 to be eligible. Note: Double degree students are only required to complete 18 credit points of studies at Level 3.
