The Bachelor of Arts has four Professional Futures domains which build skills and abilities that employers value and seek. You will not be required to do any single specific unit across these domains. Instead, you can build your own suite of experiences and attributes to create a graduate profile that is unique to you: Global Immersion Broaden your knowledge and life experience by participating in the Global Immersion Guarantee or one of our other short study trips or a semester-long programs. Our high quality international mobility experiences help our graduates to engage in the world and prepare them for the global workplace. Intercultural Expertise Build skills to thrive in globalised work places and communities. The reality for all our graduates is that they are competing in a global employment market and whether they find themselves in local, national or international organisations these will all be multi-cultural environments. The capacity to successfully navigate the complexities of culturally different environments is a signature capability of an Arts graduate. These units are designed to specifically address the development of our students’ capabilities. Professional Experience  Through industry internships and placements, create networks and skills for your career development. Professional experiences allow you to start activating your knowledge in real world scenarios. It aids you to see your learning in an employment context. Innovation Capability Cultivate an innovation mindset as you develop your creative and enterprising abilities. These units offer you the opportunity to understand and build innovation capabilities and enterprising skills. You are challenged to seek/build the solutions required to transform our world by leveraging your own experiences and activities outside the classroom.

Notes

You can enrich your degree by honing your academic and professional skills through a range of flagship rich educational experiences (FREE), including the Monash Innovation Guarantee, Global Immersion Guarantee, Research, Experimentation and Discovery and/or Volunteering. These FREE units may be credited in place of your free electives if approved by the faculty. There are both 6 and 12 credit point unit options available.

If you are enrolled in a double degree it may be possible to utilise credit from one or both of your degrees to do a 6 and/or 12 credit point flagship rich educational experience. For information on eligible double degree combinations please see FREE.

This will lead to the award of two degrees, the Bachelor of Arts and the degree awarded by the partner course. The requirements for the award of the Bachelor of Arts degree are the same whether the award is earned through a single or double degree course. You should refer to the course entry for the partner course in your double degree for the requirements of the other degree.

Note: The Psychology extended major is accredited by APAC as a level 1 sequence of units. The extended major is only offered in select courses. Refer to the extended major for more detail.

Learning outcomes

These course outcomes are aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework and Monash Graduate Attributes.

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:

1.

critically analyse and apply the content, methods of investigation and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of at least one area of study;

2.

develop and communicate creative and innovative solutions in at least one area of study in a range of formats, and for various audiences;

3.

communicate an argument through the use of critical, evaluative and analytical skills;

4.

design, conduct, and communicate an independent research project;

5.

engage in scholarship or professional practice collaboratively and respectfully;

6.

demonstrate competencies required for responsible global citizenship.

 

Structure

This is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts:

Part A. Arts listed major

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your practical and theoretical skills and knowledge in one Faculty of Arts listed major area of study. You will learn to critically analyse, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of the area of study.

Part B. Arts specified study

This will expose you to several arts disciplines contributing breadth to your knowledge of the arts, humanities and social sciences. You will have the flexibility of  learning about several areas of study before finalising your choice of major.  You will also build skills and abilities that employers value and seek by completing units from the Professional Futures domains. 

Part C. Free elective study

This will enable you to further develop your knowledge of your chosen major, or of arts, humanities and social sciences more broadly, through a second major or a minor. Alternatively you can select units from across the University in which you are eligible to enrol. You are encouraged to take an internship as an elective unit. Internships are an opportunity to apply coursework to real-world situations and develop workplace skills. You can also use your free electives for study tours, field trips, internships, exchange opportunities or explore the Arts enrichment and Monash Intercultural Lab  for other available options. 

Master's accelerated pathway

If you satisfy the below requirements, you may be invited to join the master's accelerated pathway program:

  • have achieved a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 65%; and 
  • have completed a minimum of 96 credit points in your bachelor degree, including 24 credit points towards your Arts major.

Please note that you should also have a minimum of 24 credit points of free electives available.

On joining the accelerated pathway your 24 credit points of free elective units will be replaced with specified units from your destination master's degree. As long as you attain a minimum WAM of 60% at the end of your bachelor studies, you will be eligible to continue your chosen master's studies the following year.

Progression to further studies

Honours

Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to Bachelor of Arts (Honours) (A3701). You must have:

  • completed 48 credit points of studies within your chosen honours area of study;
  • obtained a distinction grade average (75%) or above in 24 credit points of studies in your chosen honours area of study at Level 3; and
  • an overall WAM of 75 in your completed undergraduate degree.

For some disciplines, completion of specific units or their equivalent are required for admission to honours. The details are provided with the requirements for each discipline to which this applies.

Master's

Successful completion of this course may also provide a pathway to a master's course within the Faculty of Arts. You must have completed all the requirements for your undergraduate degree with a 60% average.
