Linguistics and English Language is a major that is dedicated to the scientific study of language and its applications. Across our varied units, you will delve into the structure, diversity and use of languages across a range of settings, as well as the links between language, culture and identity. Language is central to human communication and throughout your studies with us you will explore the ways in which linguistic analysis and description is applied to solve real-world problems in areas such as education, the justice system, business, IT and psychology. A particular strength of linguistics at Monash is the focus on language variation, multilingualism and language and social justice. Whether focused on English, indigenous languages, sign languages or cross-linguistic analysis, units explore the ways in which internal variation, language contact and change over time are hallmarks of all language varieties, and the challenges this raises for linguistic theories. Our program has strong links to industry and communities and leaves you well placed to pursue a variety of careers in Linguistics and related fields. If you major in Linguistics and English Language, you are also encouraged to gain the experience of learning a language other than their first language either through a major or minor.
