The unit will introduce you to the methods and approaches used to analyse pathogenic mechanisms of bacterial infections. The emphasis is on genetic approaches to studying pathogenesis, processes in pathogenesis, bacterial exotoxins and endotoxins. The details of these processes for selected bacterial infections will be studied by discussion of the most recent scientific research literature in this area.

Active learning

Pathogenesis of bacterial infectious diseases is taught with a student-centred approach. The lecture theory component of this unit covers learning outcomes 1 to 4 and helps students to understand complex pathogenic processes and how the host immune system responds. The understanding of pathogenic mechanisms and how researches study pathogens complements the collaborative learning within the book writing workshop groups. Each workshop group cooperatively prepares a compendium on a particular bacterial pathogen. Each student will research a specific topic area and contribute a 3000 word chapter to the book. In addition to learning outcomes 1-3, the Book workshop project covers largely learning outcomes 4, 5 and 6. Each Book writing group is led by an academic staff member who, week by week, using a chosen bacterial pathogen, guides students in the areas of database searching, reading and understanding the scientific literature, scientific writing, informal and formal oral presentations and also in editing scientific work. You are encouraged to take control of the projects many decisions, for example chapter content and production of the group’s book which provides great opportunities for students to engage in collegiate interactions and collaborative learning and to take on leadership positions of production editors for the book. You will receive a professionally printed copy of the group’s final compendium at our end of semester book launch event.
