Overview

This unit explores various established techniques such as dye penetration, magnetic particle, eddy current, ultrasonic and radiography for non-destructive testing (NDT) and contrasts them with destructive methods. Industry standards for NDT and acceptance standards will be included. Case studies from a variety of industries which include microelectronics, aerospace, marine, railway … For more content click the Read More button below.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:
1.

Apply principles and techniques of non-destructive testing (NDT), specifically dye penetration, magnetic particle, eddy current, ultrasonic radiography and optical inspection.

2.

Relate the capabilities and limitations of established NDT techniques to their respective basic working principles.

3.

Evaluate the various NDT methods for flaw detection and damage assessment and be able to identify the appropriate technique for a given scenario.

4.

Perform data acquisition and signal analysis related to NDT techniques and provide the solution of health and integrity of the test specimen.

5.

Communicate the result and analysis both in oral and written form.

Assessment summary

Continuous assessment: 50%

Final assessment: 50%

This unit contains threshold hurdle requirements that you must achieve to be able to pass the unit. You are required to achieve at least 45% in the total continuous assessment component and at least 45% in the final assessment component. The consequence of not achieving a hurdle requirement is a fail grade (NH) and a maximum mark of 45 for the unit.
