Active Learning

The unit offers online lectures with active learning material and active tutorials for application of knowledge.

Lectures

Two one-hour lectures per week, provided as online video recordings.

Tutorials

One 2-hour tutorial per week, for active engagement with the lecture content and application of knowledge to problems in human pathology. Tutorials are an opportunity for students to clarify their understanding of online content and consolidate their knowledge. Attendance is strongly encouraged, but not compulsory.

Laboratory classes

Eight 3-hour laboratory classes during the semester.

Pre-laboratory class material

Laboratory classes are preceded by pre-class online modules one week prior to the laboratory class to support student preparation. The pre-class material forms part of the 6 hours of self-directed learning required per week.

Laboratory class material

Laboratory classes comprise orientation and safety material, assignment details and guidance, case studies, group demonstrations, histological slide and gross specimen viewing, hands-on exercises and in-class extended-matching question (EMQ) quiz assessments.

Post-laboratory class material

One laboratory class report.

Revision sessions

Revision sessions for consolidation of learning and assignment feedback are scheduled throughout the semester.

Resource materials

Videos of normal histology, histopathology and gross pathology, are provided to assist students with self-directed learning.

Produce an executive summary of the pathology of a specific disease.

Produce a professional pathology report that integrates case history and several pathology results to generate a diagnosis.

Three tests covering theoretical knowledge to be completed at specified times across the semester.

Demonstration of laboratory skills (including microscopy, biochemical analysis, and digital pathology interpretation) related to laboratory classes. Demonstrations will be completed in 6 laboratory classes across the semester.

You are required to demonstrate at least 50% of laboratory analytical techniques and skills across six laboratories.

Each assessment can be repeated 3 times.
