GCH5901 - Research project in green chemistry part A

Overview

GCH5901 (12 credit points) in combination with GCH5902 (12 credit points) will allow you to undertake a major research project in green and sustainable chemistry over two consecutive semesters, during the advanced practical component of the course. A research thesis will enable you to consolidate the theoretical knowledge and analytical skills acquired during the Master course in a research context. The units will allow you to develop independent learning and research skills on a topic of your choice, related to the core and elective units offered in the course. The unit will primarily comprise independent research but includes some scheduled activities to enhance and develop transferable skills for success in research. You will be assessed primarily on the thesis submitted at the conclusion of the unit. You will be encouraged to link your research projects to industry and wider global issues, where innovative green chemistry approaches can lead to novel products and processes for the good of society. This research project experience represents a possible pathway to a PhD studies.

Enrolment Rule

COREQUISITE: GCH5902 Research project in green chemistry part B (GCH5901 and GCH5902 can be taken in any sequence but must be taken in consecutive semesters).

PREREQUISITE: An average grade of 70% across Master core units (GCH5010, GCH5020, GCH5030) and approval from the School/Department where the research will be undertaken. Students should complete Part B, preparatory studies in Chemistry, before taking this unit.

PROHIBITION: GCH5900, GCH5920, GCH5930, unless approved by the unit coordinator.

Notes

You have the option of undertaking your research project in approved external institutions including CSIRO, university laboratories outside the School of Chemistry, companies with appropriate resources and facilities. In some cases, the external institution might be the employer of the student. Appropriate external supervision or equivalent arrangements needs to be demonstrated, and will coordinate with the Monash academic supervisor. Approval must be given by the unit coordinator for such arrangements.
