Overview

This unit provides an overview of water and wastewater systems in urban environments. The overview focuses on these systems' functions regarding the provision of drinking water and wastewater treatment and their modes of operation. Specific topics include water supply, water use and consumption, drinking water treatment and distribution, wastewater characterisation … For more content click the Read More button below.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:
1.

Discern components of the water treatment chain and explain the chemical processes for water hardness removal.

2.

Design the various components of active and passive wastewater treatment plants.

3.

Determine potential quantities of recycled wastewater and recovered biosolids based on designs of secondary wastewater treatment plant.

4.

Discern the components of advanced secondary wastewater treatment and energy recovery processes and explain the biological processes for the anaerobic treatment of sludge.

5.

Decide between various wastewater treatment systems for differing problems given space, economic, and environmental constraints.

Assessment summary

Continuous assessment: 50%

Final assessment: 50%

This unit contains hurdle requirements that you must achieve to be able to pass the unit. You are required to achieve at least 45% in the total continuous assessment component and at least 45% in the final assessment component. The consequence of not achieving a hurdle requirement is a fail grade (NH) and a maximum mark of 45 for the unit.
