Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:

Apply project evaluation techniques including the triple bottom line against the overall business model.

Identify the elements of the project life cycle, including plan, control, and organise and allocate resources.

Evaluate and apply the basic tools and techniques to plan, organise and manage a project.

Identify strategic constraints in managing the scope, time, cost and quality components.

Explain the interconnection of quality, risk and contract management.

Discuss professional responsibility, occupational health and safety and ethical conduct.

Active learning

Learning in the unit is mainly through lectures, practice classes and online learning. This unit is delivered in a flipped-learning mode, in which content is delivered prior to the lecture using videos and a unit textbook. You are expected to have reviewed the online materials along with other resources on Moodle. The video lecture is a session in which the learning for the week is applied to different aspects of project management. This forms the basis for the groupwork project throughout the semester. The group project aims to provide an environment in which you can gain an appreciation of how the topics covered in lectures may be applied to a realistic project management task.

Assessment summary

Continuous assessment: 40%

Final assessment: 60%

This unit contains threshold hurdle requirements that you must achieve to be able to pass the unit. You are required to achieve at least 45% in the total continuous assessment component and at least 45% in the final assessment component. The consequence of not achieving a hurdle requirement is a fail grade (NH) and a maximum mark of 45 for the unit.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
