BTF5000 - Corporate governance, risk and social responsibility

Overview

Corporations have a significant impact on the world that we live in, our communities and sustainability. In this unit, we consider how a corporation’s existence as a separate legal entity brings benefits as well as risks. Current issues of global significance such as environmental risks and social responsibility have increasingly been recognised as problems that corporations should address. The unit explores the regulations and governance mechanisms aimed at promoting corporate responsibility and mitigating risks. We examine regulations that require directors to act responsibly and with integrity, maintain mechanisms for internal monitoring of risks such as audit committees, and promote transparency. Case studies involving corporate failures and controversies are used to develop applied knowledge of corporate governance regulations.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:

communicate an understanding of corporate responsibility and governance, and identify the relevance of both in relation to a range of key global issues

identify the regulations and laws that apply in various corporate governance contexts

understand the impact of companies' environmental and social governance on stakeholders

describe the strategies employed by corporations to enhance governance and reduce regulatory non-compliance.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
