Overview
ATS1191 is aimed at students with no previous experience of the Spanish language. It provides an integrated, innovative and communicatively oriented Spanish course which develops all-round competence in the basic structures of the language. In addition, students are introduced to key aspects of Spanish and Latin American cultures and societies.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:
1.
demonstrate basic speaking, listening, reading and writing skills (and the corresponding appropriate vocabulary) to communicate effectively in Spanish in a limited range of situations and on a limited range of topics;
2.
recognise and use basic structures and sounds of Spanish;
3.
recognise and use when necessary a vocabulary of approximately 600 Spanish words;
4.
engage successfully in conversations and discussions in Spanish, about themselves, their family, friends, neighbourhood and country;
5.
accurately locate information in basic texts in Spanish of up to 500 words;
6.
identify and discuss key aspects of modern Spanish and Latin American culture and societies at a foundational level.
