Software engineering comprises the core principles consistent in software construction and maintenance: fundamental software processes and life-cycles; mathematical foundations of software engineering; requirements analysis; software engineering methodologies and standard notations; principles of software architecture and re-use; software quality frameworks and validation; software development; and maintenance environments and tools. Current industry-strength programming languages, technologies and systems feature highly in the practical components, electives and projects of the course.

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours): Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

CPD is a compulsory requirement for all Engineering students. You must complete 420 hours of continuous professional development in order to graduate with the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) qualification. It is a collection of all work including volunteer, personal and professional practice experiences outside the classroom which may be in the form of 12 weeks of relevant vacation employment or an equivalent combination of approved professional development and/or engineering employment taken throughout the duration of the course. You must submit a series of reflections on your experience with particular reference to the development of each of the key Engineers Australia Stage 1 competencies. Part C. Software engineering knowledge and application 108 credit points

You must complete the following core software engineering units AND one unit at Level 4 or 5 from the software engineering technical electives list.

Note 1: If you are selected for the Faculty of Information Technology Industry-based Learning (IBL) placement program, you will complete FIT4042 in place of FIT4002.

FIT4042 - Industry-based learning (IBL) placement program 6 credit points

In Year 2, you may apply for selection into the Faculty of Information Technology's industry-based learning (IBL) placement program. FIT4042 is an 18 credit point placement unit that is completed in Semester 2 of Year 3 in the standard progression map. If selected for the program, you enrol in FIT4042 which replaces FIT4002 and a 6 credit point software engineering technical elective.

Part D. Professional practice

Continuous professional development is a crucial part of meeting the Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competency Standard to be a Professional Engineer. You must enrol in ENG0001 in your final year and satisfy the professional development requirements if you are studying at the Clayton campus.

The Engineering Accreditation Council Malaysia have similar industrial training requirements. You must enrol in ENG0002 in the second semester of your third year and complete the industrial training required if you are studying at the Malaysia campus.

Part E. Elective study - Specialisation36 credit points

Students enrolled in the single degree Engineering36 credit points

To satisfy course requirements, you must take care to complete the electives at the required unit level.

In Year 2, you must complete 12 credit points of electives which can be Level 1, 2 or 3 units from Engineering or other faculties, subject to meeting the unit enrolment rules. Please ensure that you adhere to the course rules regarding Level 1 units and do not exceed the maximum 60 credit points allowed.

In Years 3 and 4, you must complete 24 credit points of electives which must be Level 3 or 4 units and from your engineering specialisation technical electives list. You may also enrol in up to two Level 5 units in your final year. If you intend to enrol in the Faculty's Master of Engineering post-graduate, completing Level 5 units that are core in the Master's course will reduce the total duration of your Master's study.

Software engineering technical electives36 credit points

When choosing your electives, it is important to select only from your specialisation technical electives list. This ensures that your elective studies align with and contribute to the knowledge and skills required within your chosen field of study.
