You will apply your knowledge of cells and tissues, the nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems to fundamental nursing and midwifery skills in a simulated clinical environment. The unit also provides you with the opportunity to investigate the evidence for essential nursing and midwifery skills.

Students must submit a domestic and international (where required) police check, working with children check, immunisation compliance forms and evidence of serology to pass the unit and be allocated a clinical placement.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:
1.

Describe normal human body structure, from molecules to organ systems, and how these are functionally integrated to maintain homeostasis;

2.

Describe, and explain the significance of, the normal structure and function of the central and peripheral nervous systems, and the cardiovascular and respiratory systems;

3.

Apply knowledge of human anatomy and physiology as they relate to health assessment and care in nursing and midwifery practice

4.

Apply knowledge of the nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems in the assessment, escalation and documentation of vital signs

5.

Demonstrate satisfactory performance of fundamental nursing and midwifery skills, including the accurate assessment of vital signs

6.

Outline the principles of pharmacology, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics necessary for safe medication administration

7.

Apply the principles of accountable documentation to the recording of systematic health assessment data

8.

Demonstrate readiness for clinical placement and future professional nursing and midwifery practice

Assessment summary

Assessment in this unit includes hurdle assessment tasks. Failure of any hurdle assessment task may result in failure of the unit.

As part of Course requirements students are required to submit all mandatory clinical requirements (immunisations, Working with Children's Check and police check)

1 - Workbook (Equivalent 1,200 words)
2 - Mid-semester assessment examination (100 mins including reading time)
3 - Clinical demonstration (30 mins)
4 - Final scheduled assessment (2 hours and 30 mins including reading time)
