Overview

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2022) estimates that 1 in 6 Australians live with a disability. In this unit, you will further your understanding of ableism, disability and inclusive practice, and the intersection between mental health and disability. You will have the opportunity to develop skills that are relevant to working in varied contexts with people who have lived and living experience of disability and those who support them. This learning will be positioned within key frameworks to allow for a thorough examination of societal barriers, such as access to services and employment, and possible solutions to better facilitate the inclusion of people with lived experience of disabilities. This unit will assist you to appreciate the complex impacts of disability and work towards more inclusive practices.

Rules

Enrolment Rule

Students enrolled in M6042 Master of Applied Mental Health need to have received prior credit or a passing grade for PSY5011, PSY5012, PSY5013, PSY5014 to enrol in this unit.

Students enrolled in M6001 Master of Advanced Health Care Practice or B6035 Master of Human Resource Management (who have completed 24 credit points) can directly enrol in this unit.

Students in all other courses must have permission to enrol in this unit.

Assessment summary

Assessment in this unit includes hurdle assessment tasks. Failure of any hurdle assessment task may result in failure of the unit.

1 - Informative media on a disability (2 mins animated video or 7-10 minute podcast or A4 infographic)

2 - Action plan for workplace inclusion (2,000 words)

3 - Critical reflection (10 - 12 minutes recorded video or 1,500 written words)
