Overview

This unit is designed to develop and enhance the health-related knowledge, skills and capabilities of Monash Health and Physical Education (HPE) pre-service teachers. Health and education are powerful partners in a number of contexts including health promotion, public health, schooling and public pedagogy. In recognition of this the unit acts as the foundation for exploring the various dimensions, meanings and processes of health with a focus on health education. This includes considering the multi-dimensional and inter-related aspects of ‘health’ in First Nations and other contexts as well as other conceptualisations such as wellbeing. A key aim of the unit is to build the necessary preliminary health knowledge base and starting technical skills to teach health education in a variety of contexts, for example HPE. The unit takes an approach that includes physical practice of developing skills as well as a set of hurdles in mindfulness, academic and research skills and some cooperative learning.

On successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:

describe you own practices and experiences of health and wellbeing situated in the larger
national/international context and meanings

demonstrate academic and research skills in order to evaluate health information

create a resource to demonstrate contemporary knowledge associated with foundational health
practices with an educational intent

reflect upon a health and wellbeing framework or practice to demonstrate an understanding of
foundational health concepts

communicate ideas to others using an appropriate range of verbal and nonverbal communication
strategies and collaborative techniques

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study.

Usually, you can expect to engage with:

• 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and

• the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study

Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
