Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:
demonstrate knowledge of current legal frameworks, mental health practice standards, and codes of ethical practice as they apply to the competent practice of educational and developmental psychology with diverse clients across the lifespan, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
apply research evidence and advanced psychological knowledge of development across the lifespan to your psychological practice
use advanced psychological knowledge to inform the selection, administration, and interpretation of a broad range of assessment tools in educational and developmental psychology that are responsive to the needs of diverse cultural groups including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
devise, implement and evaluate culturally responsive preventative and intervention strategies using research evidence from an educational and developmental perspective
apply advanced knowledge in educational and developmental psychology in your provision of counselling, guidance and coaching for relationship, behavioural, and personal adjustment difficulties and in your collaboration and consultation with third parties including teachers and other professionals to achieve outcomes including systematic changes to policy and processes.
Professional recognition
Eligibility for general registration as a psychologist in Australia is determined by the Psychology Board of Australia consistent with the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme. The Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology Advanced, is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council. It meets the requirements for a sixth year in psychology and is approved by the Psychology Board of Australia under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.
With a further two years of supervised practice in educational and developmental psychology, graduates are currently eligible for endorsement as Educational and Developmental Psychologists with the Psychology Board of Australia. Graduates also qualify for membership of the Australian Psychological Society, and meet requirements for membership of the College of Educational and Developmental Psychologists of the Australian Psychological Society.
Structure
The course is structured in two parts: Part A. Advanced studies in educational and developmental psychology and Part B. Advanced clinical placement.
Part A. Advanced studies in educational and developmental psychology
These studies will advance your knowledge and skill development to practice in the field of educational and developmental psychology. Guided by sound ethical principles, and through collaborative participation in coursework lectures and workshops, you will develop both expert knowledge of educational and developmental psychology across the lifespan and your critical thinking skills for professional practice.
Part B. Advanced clinical placement
These studies involve professional experience in educational and developmental settings where you have the opportunity to apply theory to practice under the supervision of experienced practitioners who have an area of practice endorsement in educational and developmental psychology. Across the course you will complete a minimum of 750 recorded hours of supervised professional experience.
