Overview

Social sciences frame and analyse questions about the social world. How societies respond to pressing problems like poverty, inequality, crime, and climate change requires competency in interpreting data, and understanding basic algebra, calculus, and statistics. These skills are becoming increasingly valuable in business, public sector, and academia. You will learn to represent relationships between relevant socioeconomic variables using mathematical functions, depict these mathematical functions graphically, and interpret them. Using a variety of examples, the emphasis will be to develop the ability to utilise some basic tools from mathematics and statistics to understand and analyse seemingly distinct social, economic and political phenomena.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning and peer directed learning.
